Detached: A house that is free-
standing and shares no party walls
with another building.

Domestic buildings

A domestic building is one that has
been designed and built for a single
household to live in. Examples of
domestic buildings include the
following.

Bungalow: A single-storey house
with no stairs.

Dormer bungalow: A single-storey
house with stairs and habitable
rooms in the roof space. Protruding
windows called dormer windows
give the building their name.

Semi-detached: A house that shares
a single party wall with one other
property.

Link detached: A house that
adjoins another by sharing a

repurposed from its original use to
become living accommodation, i.e.

High rise: A building with 11
storeys or more, normally
containing single-storey flats.

Definition of building heights

A low-rise building is any building that

has 1–3 storeys.

A medium-rise building has 4–8

storeys.

A high-rise building has 8 or more

storeys.

A super high-rise building has over 40

storeys.

*Note: storey height is measured to the floor and

not to the roof.
