Annotating is an individual practice in which you need to find a system that works for you. But there are some general principles to follow:

1. Don't underline or highlight too much
2. Have a consistent set of symbols for marking texts (for example, stars for lines you want to quote, arrows for ideas you agree or disagree with)
3. Add a comment to everything you mark so you can decode why you left the mark in the first place.
