Teacher Background

●Matter (anything that has mass and takes up space) can be classified by physical properties
including, shape, texture, flexibility, relative temperature, and whether the material is a solid or
liquid.

●Matter can be observed using the senses as tools and by using tools such as hand lenses,
goggles, beakers, student thermometers, flashlights, magnets, and balances.

●States of matter, such as solid and liquid, are physical properties.

●Engineers choose materials to build their designs based on the material’s physical properties.

Possible Student Misconceptions

●Students may think that an object can be classified by only one physical
property.

●Students may think that heat (a form of energy) and relative temperature(a
measurement) are the same.

●Students may think that solids can only be hard and not soft.

●Students may think that materials like sand and salt are not solids.

Matter

LO: SWBAT classify matter by observable
properties using patterns and tools.

DOL: Given scenarios, SW correctly classify
matter by observable properties using patterns
in at least 3 of 4 questions.

2.6A Classify matter by observable physical properties, including texture, flexibility, and relative temperature, and identify whether a
material is a solid or liquid.
SEPs 2.5A Identify and use patterns to describe phenomena or design solutions.

What is matter?
Matter is anything that takes up space and has mass. Matter
has properties. A property is something about an object that you
can observe with your senses.

The canoe, the water,
and the dog are matter.
