CAMERA POLICY
Teachers will send a private message then verbal warning if a student’s camera is
not on. Continued non-camera use will result in moving up the discipline ladder.
First offense: Teacher conferences with student and documents in IC.
Second offense: Teacher conferences with student, contacts LC and documents in
IC.
Third offense: Teacher conferences with student, contacts LC, sends over to
academic coach for support and documents in IC.
Fourth offense: Academic coach submits discipline referral to discipline AP
Please make sure to turn your camera on at the beginning of each class.
You can set it to private (only teacher sees) or public (everyone sees).

Learning Target
I can explain how people affect water, and aquatic
organisms.
I can identify the difference between eutriphication and ocean acidification.

Water Pollution
7
Foreign substances make their way into the water ways.
What is it?
Top pollutant in NC is sediment.
8
Two Types of Pollution
Comes from multiple sources.
Cannot identify, and therefore cannot lay singular blame
Can directly identify the exact source of pollution.

Point Pollution
Non-Point Pollution

...we use fertilizer for those crops.
However, some of that is transported into waterways through runoff.
When we grow crops...
11
This process is called eutrophication.
12
When there are too many nutrients like nitrates and phosphates in a water body.
Eutrophication:

Understanding Ocean
Acidification
Climate Chemistry
21
What is ocean acidification?
●Ocean acidification is a phenomenon caused by the absorption of
carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere into the surface waters
of the ocean.
●This process leads to changes in the chemical composition of
seawater, resulting in a decrease in pH and alterations in carbonate
chemistry.
●Understanding the chemical processes underlying ocean acidification is
crucial for comprehending its impacts on marine ecosystems and
biodiversity.
22
Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Dissolution
●CO2 from the atmosphere dissolves into ocean waters.
23
Carbonic Acid Formation
●CO2 reacts with water to
form carbonic acid (H2CO3).
●CO2 + H2O ⇌ H2CO3
a.Note: Reversible process
with equilibrium arrows.
24
Hydrogen Ion (H+) Release and
Bicarbonate Formation
●Carbonic acid (H2CO3)
dissociates into hydrogen
ions (H+) and bicarbonate
ions (HCO3-).
25
pH Change
●Increased dissolved
CO2 leads to carbonic
acid formation and
decreased seawater
pH.
26
Impact on Calcium Carbonate Structures
●Decrease in
carbonate ions
affects calcifying
organisms' ability to
form calcium
carbonate structures.
27
Multiple Select
What does pH measure (hint: there are two correct answers)?
The acidity of a solution
The amount of water in a solution
How reactive a solution is
How many extra hydrogen ions there are in a solution

●Where do we put the term?
●What is the definition?
●Do you know any examples of animal or plant adaptations?
●What would a characteristic
be?.
32
What nutrients like oxygen levels temperatures and seasonal climate patterns occur here?
Characteristics of biome
Relating to stationary bodies of water, such as ponds and lakes, where water is not flowing.
