Martha might have been frightened for her own safety if
she did not already know how this experiment would
turn out: a disappointment, like so many other things her
father had tried. Instead, her worries landed on the small
crowd that had gathered to watch the results. Everyone
would see him fail, including some of her schoolmates.

When Martha’s father gave the word, her two
