Mass is the amount of matter in an object. When measuring mass, we use special tools to figure out how heavy something is.

We use grams when we're measuring lighter objects, like a pencil, a cookie, or a small bag of candy. Kilograms are used for heavier objects, like a backpack full of books, a bicycle, or even a large dog. Remember, one kilogram is equal to 1,000 grams, so when you’re dealing with something really heavy, kilograms are the better choice!

This is one of the most common tools. You place an object on one side of the scale and weights on the other until both sides are balanced.
