Introduction

Definition: Procedure text is a type of writing that
provides step-by-step instructions on how to do
something.

Purpose: To guide readers through a sequence of
actions to achieve a specific result.

Goal: States the purpose of the procedure.1.
Materials: Lists the items needed to complete the task.2.

Steps: Provides a clear sequence of instructions, often
numbered.

Conclusion: Summarizes the outcome or result.

Structure

Imperative sentences: Use commands to instruct the
reader (e.g., "Cut the paper into strips").
Time words: Indicate the sequence of steps (e.g., "first,"
"next," "then").
Adverbs of frequency: Show how often an action is
performed (e.g., "always," "usually").
Conjunctions: Connect steps and indicate cause-and-
effect relationships (e.g., "because," "if").
Simple present tense: Used to describe actions and
procedures.

Language
features

How-to procedure: Explains how to do something (e.g., cooking a
recipe, assembling furniture).
Instructional procedure: Provides step-by-step instructions for a
task (e.g., operating a device, following safety procedures).
Operational procedure: Outlines the steps involved in a process (e.g.,
manufacturing a product, conducting an experiment).

Examples

Cooking a recipe: "Ingredients: flour, sugar, eggs, butter...
Instructions: Preheat oven to 350°F. Combine flour, sugar,
and eggs. Add melted butter..."
Assembling a piece of furniture: "Materials: screwdriver, Allen
wrench, parts A, B, C... Steps: Attach part A to part B using
the Allen wrench. Insert screws into part C..."
Following safety procedures: "Emergency procedures: In case
of fire, exit the building immediately. Pull the fire alarm.
Proceed to the designated assembly area."
