Important Vocabulary Terms

Calorie- a unit of heat used to indicate the amount of energy that foods will produce in the human body. The amount of calories you need to eat is based on your age, gender, and activity level.​


Food Label- printed on many food items provides you with important information about that food. The label is a guide for letting you know what nutrients are found in the food you eat.

A food INGREDIENT is any substance that is added to a food to achieve a desired effect. The term “food ingredient” includes food additives, which are substances added to foods for specific technical and/or functional purposes during processing, storage or packaging.
