Bison had once nearly disappeared. “Restoring bison and fire to the tallgrass prairie has been hard,” says Hamilton. “It takes a huge effort to re-create a
natural system once it’s been changed by people. But this is also a great example of how we can work to be a part of [the way nature heals].”

The scientists worried that allowing the bison to roam
would lead to too much grazing. This might destroy the
prairie they were working so hard to save. But their plan has shown admirable results.

3 In first or second grade, a friend's father who
was an astronomer came to talk to our class for
career day. He was asking everyone questions,
and I didn't have a lot of answers at the time. I
didn't know a ton about astronomy at that
point. So instead I kept asking him questions
because I wanted to know more. I think that
showed something about my interest and my
passion for the subject. He gave me color
printouts of pictures of the universe from the
Hubble Space Telescope. My mom was so
happy that I was so happy that she framed
them very nicely and hung them above my bed,
and they've been there ever since.
