In spite of its weather conditions, Death Valley welcomes
over 1 million visitors each year. With 3.4 million acres of
wilderness, there is no lack of things to see and do.
Visitors can hike through the colorful canyons, search for
interesting wildlife, enjoy the breathtaking views, and
camp under the stars of the clear desert sky.

Excerpt from “Death Valley” used with permission from HMH © Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishing Company

It is spring in California. The sun shines down on a desert road
with bright yellow sunflowers in full bloom on either side.
Snow-capped mountains tower ahead. The road narrows and
winds through the mountains. The mountains part, and there
is a valley below. Circling the white valley floor are fields of
wildflowers—golds and purples and pinks.

Read the dictionary entry for the word bright.

This text makes me think of …

the

After reading the text, I remember when …

This reminds me of when my family moved last summer. On
moving day, I felt scared and excited at the same time. I kept my
favorite action figure in my pocket the whole ride to our new
house.

This text makes me think of Chapter 14: Good-bye, Silver; Hello,
Sticks because both stories show how special things help us
through big changes, like Mei's sketchbook during her move or
Peg's wheelchair.

I learned about how artists around the world use sketchbooks,
just like Mei. In art class, we talked about famous artists who kept
sketchbooks to practice their ideas and remember things they
saw.

47

Peg and Mei are similar when dealing with change
because they both think about good memories from their
past. Peg states, “Silver had carried me to school,
distributed countless treats, and taken me safely to O.T.,
my sessions with Miss Ballard [...]” In Mei’s story the text
states, “As soon as Mei was settled in the car, she
opened her sketchbook and looked at the pictures she
had drawn in the past week." These parts of the text
show that both Peg and Mei use memories to help them
cope with big changes.
