We now know that…
Respiratory system includes trachea, bronchi, lungs, diaphragm, and the muscles between the ribs.
Gas exchange is the diffusion of gases into and out of the body
Oxygen diffuses from the air sacs into the blood. Carbon dioxide diffuses the other way.
Thin walls of air sacs help gas exchange to take place quickly.

Definition of terms:
Respiration: a process in living organisms involving the production of energy, typically with the intake of oxygen and the release of carbon dioxide from the oxidation of complex organic substances.
Gas exchange: It is the delivery of oxygen from the lungs to the bloodstream, and the elimination of carbon dioxide from the bloodstream to the lungs.
Diffusion: the process of a substance spreading out to evenly fill its container or environment.

RESPIRATION vs BREATHING
Breathing is a biophysical process that involves the exchange of gases through inhalation and exhalation
Respiration is a biochemical process to release energy from organic compounds which are then used for performing different physical activities.

Structure of the human respiratory system
Pharynx- is part of the conducting zone for air into the lungs.Main function is to warm and humidify air before it reaches the lungs.
Larynx- to protect the airway from choking on material in the throat. To regulate the flow of air into our lungs The production of sounds used for speech.
10
Structure of the human respiratory system
Trachea- also called the windpipe, cartilaginous tube that connects the larynx to the bronchi of the lungs
Bronchi- the airways that lead from the trachea into the lungs
11
Structure of the human respiratory system
Alveoli- where the lungs and the blood exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide during the process of breathing in and breathing out. also called as air sac.
Diaphragm- located below the lungs, is the major muscle of respiration.
