Possible Student Misconceptions
●Students may not differentiate between variables and controls in an investigation.
●Students may try to change multiple parts of an investigation causing there to be too many
variables.
●Students may not understand that only one variable can change during an experimental
investigation.
●Students may think that magnets act on all metals.

Explain how the distance between the car tester and the car impacted
how the car moved.
The car moved
faster and farther
when the distance
was short
between the car
tester and the car.

What is a noncontact force?
A noncontact force is a force that acts on an object without
touching the object. Gravity and magnetism are noncontact
forces. You can plan and conduct a descriptive investigation to explore the patterns of noncontact forces by using a magnet to pick up objects.

What happens when poles of magnets are close?
Magnets attract,or pull objects closer, when opposite poles are
toward each other. Magnets repel,or push objects away, when
like poles are toward each other.
