Modālie darbības vārdi

​Apgalvojuma teikumā modālais darbības vārds MUST izsaka pienākumu vai nepieciešamību. Tas tiek tulkots kā vajadzības izteiksme latviešu valodā, liekot jā- pirms darbības vārda.

​MUST lieto, kad runātājs pats izlemj, ka to ir nepieciešams darīt; iekšēja vajadzība.

Nolieguma forma MUSTN'T (MUST + NOT) izsaka aizliegumu. Latviešu valodā to izsaka, lietojot vārdu "nedrīkst".

Lai gan apgalvojuma teikumā modālais darbības vārds HAVE TO / HAS TO arī izsaka pienākumu vai nepieciešamību tāpat kā MUST, bet tam ir arī cita nozīme un pielietojums.
HAVE TO / HAS TO lieto, kad ārējs faktors nosaka (cilvēki, likumi), ka kaut ko vajag vai ir nepieciešams izdarīt.
DON'T HAVE TO / DOESN'T HAVE TO lieto, kad kaut kas ir nepieciešams darīt, bet, ja grib, var arī darīt. Tas nav aizliegums.

Modālais darbības vārds CAN izsaka:

Aiz modālā darbības vārda CAN vienmēr jālieto darbības vārds nenoteiksmē! 

​Need - vajag, ir nepieciešams.
Piemēram: I need a car. Man vajag mašīnu.
Needn't vai don't need to - nav nepieciešams darīt.
Piemērs: You needn't mind me.
May/might - atļauja vai iespējamība, ka kaut kas notiks.
Piemēram: May I use your car?
I may use your car tomorrow.
Should - rekomendācija.
Piemērs: You look bad. You should go to the doctor.
