The charts below show information about honey-bee colonies and honey production in the US.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
34
The two bar charts depict the number of honey-bee colonies in millions and the honey production in tonnes in the US from 1970 to 2010.
Overall, both the number of colonies and honey production declined significantly over the 40-year period, with fluctuations in colony numbers but a steady decrease in honey production.
In 1970, there were 4 million honey-bee colonies, increasing slightly to 4.2 million in 1980. After this, the number started to drop, reaching 3.5 million in 1990 and further decreasing to 2.6 million in 2000. By 2010, the number had nearly halved, dropping to 1.8 million.
Honey production followed a downward trend throughout the period. In 1970, production was around 130,000 tonnes but decreased to 110,000 tonnes by 1980. It continued to decline to 100,000 tonnes in 1990 and 90,000 tonnes in 2000. By 2010, the output had reached 70,000 tonnes, its lowest level.
