LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Discuss the importance of validity in research, highlighting that good research is valid research when the
conclusions drawn by the researcher are legitimate.

Understand the role of statistical significance in determining whether the observed data are due to chance,
emphasizing that research never proves a theory.

FACTORS CONTRIBUTING TO CREDIBLE RESEARCH

Good research is valid when the
conclusions drawn by the researcher
are legitimate. For instance, if a
researcher concludes that
participating in psychotherapy
reduces anxiety, the research is valid
only if the therapy works.

Reliability refers to the consistency of
the measured variables. A bathroom
scale is reliable as it consistently
measures the same weight, whereas
some psychological tests may be less
reliable, affecting validity.

Statistical significance indicates the
confidence with which a scientist can
conclude that the observed data is
not due to chance or random error,
suggesting a real relationship
between variables.

CROSS-CULTURAL REPLICATION

DEFINITION OF CROSS-CULTURAL
REPLICATION

Cross-cultural replication refers to the process of testing
whether the effects observed in one culture can be
duplicated in another culture. For instance, a researcher
might test whether the effects on aggression of viewing
violent video games are the same for Japanese children
as they are for American children.

IMPORTANCE FOR EXTERNAL VALIDITY

This process is crucial for ensuring external validity,
which is observed if the same effects that have been
found in one culture are replicated in another culture. If
not replicated, it reveals a limiting condition of the
original results.
