Cabin Facts

The cabin was very small, measuring just 10 feet by 15 feet (150 square feet), with only one room.

Thoreau built the cabin by himself in 1845, with help from a few friends and neighbors.

He carefully tracked the cost, and the total came to $28.12½. This included the cost of materials like wood, nails, and a second-hand brick fireplace.

He lived in the cabin for two years, two months, and two days, from July 4, 1845, to September 6, 1847. However, he frequently went into town to interact with others and get supplies.

"I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived."

19

"Why should we live with such hurry and waste of life? We are determined to be starved before we are hungry."

20
