In the United States, every year from September 15th to October 15th, National Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated. The word "Hispanic" refers to people who speak Spanish as their native language or to the descendants of Spanish-speaking people who live in the United States.

We Celebrate Hispanic Heritage

During this special month, people honor the cultures, histories, and contributions of Hispanic people. This celebration began as a week-long event in 1968. In 1988, President Ronald Reagan extended it to a month. The start date, September 15th, is significant because it is the day that many Central American countries celebrate their independence, including Nicaragua, Honduras, Costa Rica, El Salvador, and Guatemala.
