Drill and Ceremony has a very specific vocabulary. How we form the block, how we refer to your alignment, and how we move the formation depends on your understanding the terminology associated with drill.

Drill Vocabulary
Cadence - The rhythm of marching; the number of steps per minute.
Cover - Aligning yourself to the person in front of you while keeping the proper distance.
DCID - Dress, Cover, Interval, and Distance.
Dress - Aligning yourself to the person on either side of you.
Element - The smallest drill unit, usually at least three individuals aligned behind an element leader

Flank - Extreme right or left of a formation.
Flight - At least two but not more than four elements.
Interval - The space between individuals placed side by side.
Close Interval - Four inches.
Mark Time - Marching in place.
Pace - A 24 inch step. This is the length of a full step in quick time.

Quick Time - Marching with a cadence of 100-120 steps per minute.
Rank - A single line of persons placed side by side.
Step - The distance measured from heel to heel.
Unit - Any portion of a given formation.
