DEVELOPING A RESEARCH PROPOSAL
Objectives
1. perform literature review to identify
theoretical and methodological gaps;
2. develop a conceptual framework based
on identified research gap; and
3. frame a research questions.
3
WHAT IS A RESEARCH GAP?
Research gap refers to an area within a field of study
that has not been sufficiently explored or addressed
by existing research. It represents an opportunity for
further investigation and knowledge contribution
(Ervin, 2019).

While several studies have explored factors influencing
reading comprehension, far less attention has been given to
how specific executive function factors, both individually and
in
combination,
account
for
variations
in
reading
comprehension performance. Additionally, there is a need
for further investigation into potential mediators that could
explain the mechanisms through which executive function
impacts reading comprehension (Chang, 2019).

While Chang (2019) employed structural equation model (SEM)
to analyze the influence of executive function, language
comprehension, and fluency on young children's reading
comprehension,
this
approach
primarily
captures
static
relationships. To advance the understanding of these cognitive
influences, this study utilizes quadratic growth modeling. This
statistical analysis allows
the examination of how working
memory and cognitive flexibility impact reading comprehension
and provide a more comprehensive view of how these cognitive
processes
evolve
across
different
stages
of
reading
development.

Despite valuable insights from Reimold’s (2020) study,
Barriers and Facilitators to Achieving Food Security

Pandemic,
the
use
of
convenience sampling limits the generalizability of its
findings, particularly regarding the prevalence of food
insecurity. This study uses stratified sampling to
provide more reliable and generalizable estimates of
food insecurity across different populations.

RESEARCH QUESTIONS
1. What is the working memory profile of the
respondents?
2. What is the cognitive flexibility profile of the
respondents?
3. What is the reading comprehension profile of the
respondents?

RESEARCH QUESTIONS
4. Does working memory significantly influence
reading comprehension across time?
5. Does cognitive flexibility significantly influence
reading comprehension across time?

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
This study seeks to determine the influence of executive
function factors towards reading success. In particular, the following
questions would be answered:
1. What is the working memory profile of the respondents?
2. What is the cognitive flexibility profile of the respondents?
3. What is the reading comprehension profile of the
respondents?
20
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
