The Five Themes of Geography

● The field of geography is broken

down into five themes, or
categories:
○ Location
○ Place
○ Human-Environment

Interaction

○ Movement
○ Region

Location: provides a way of locating
places, which can be absolute or relative

Absolute location

an exact point
where a place is

Relative location
where a place is in
relation to other

places

Place: includes characteristics of a
location

Human-Environment Interaction:
explains how people affect the
environment and how the environment

Movement: explains how people,
animals, goods, and ideas move from
