John sat in his classroom, glancing at the clock as the hands crawled toward noon. His stomach growled, but he already had a sinking feeling about lunch. The morning had been full of hints – the half-empty fridge he’d peeked into that morning, the way his mom had sighed as she packed his lunch. He could almost see the crumpled sandwich awaiting him in the lunchroom, the one with the stale bread she’d bought last week. John sighed, pushing his math book away. It wasn't lunchtime yet, but he already knew it wouldn't be good.

As Emily packed up her books, she couldn’t help but think of the brief exchange with her dad that morning. "Don’t rush home too quickly," he had said, a hint of a smile tugging at the corner of his mouth. She’d noticed the kitchen door had been closed, and the faintest aroma of something sweet lingered in the air as she left for school. Now, with the final bell minutes away, she felt a small flicker of excitement she couldn’t quite explain, her steps already feeling lighter.
