Why Industry Boomed
• The nation is moving west
• Natural resources are available…in larger
quantities
– Coal
– Iron
– Lead copper
– Pacific northwest
timber
• Railroads can now ship them faster because of
The Transcontinental Railroad connecting E and W
12
Oil in them thar hills…
• Titusville, PA (1859)
– Workers discover oil
– Drake’s Well
• First viable well to
Produce crude oil
– Later refined into
• machine lubricants
• Gasoline
– This will be needed for the upcoming automobile revolution
13
Steel and Oil
• The Bessemer process (1850s)
– Stronger steel at a lower cost
– Steel replaces iron for
construction (stronger &. lighter)
- Pittsburgh
- Steel making
- capital of US,
and world
- Local coal mines
- provided
cheap fuel
14
Railroad Boom
• Trains carry goods and people west
– Sleeper cars + cargo trains = more $$$
• Railroad Companies compete
– More options = lower prices for customers
• Companies bought each other out to raise prices
– Penna. RR bought 73 smaller companies
– Secret discounts for “best” customers (largest)
• Small businesses and individual passengers (farmers) still
paid full price… that seems fair, right?

Inventors &
Inventions

- numerous inventions
over his lifetime

- allowed for work and
leisure after sunset
- also phonograph
- and movie camera
- Has become the example
of the quintessential
American inventor /
entrepreneur
17

18
Inventors &
Inventions
Alexander Graham Bell
- telephone upgraded the
morse code telegraph
system
- started the corporation

Telegraph

ever
19
20
Eastman &
Matzeliger
Some inventions were for
individual people, not
businesses
-Camera (1888)
-Not the first, but one that
didn’t use chemicals or
require training
-The “average customer”
could buy one and use it
-Shoe Lasting Machine (1883)
-Revolutionized the shoe
industry
-Automated a skilled labor task
21
Transportation changes too…
• Automobiles first developed in Europe (1885)
– Benz…used gasoline + internal combustion
– Later became Mercedes Benz
– Then Henry Ford (1913)
automates the process
• His assembly line makes it
cheaper to own… each worker could earn one
• Each worker on the line repeats the same step in the
assembly process, which saves time and therefore $$$
– By 1917 he had sold 4,500,000 cars in the US
• Roads are now built across the country
22
The Assembly Line
That’s Henry Ford, by the way
23
The Wright Brothers
From bicycles to flying
machines
first though to have
little practical
application…
until the military
got involved
