The Best Evidence for the Job
2
Remember CER?
CER is how we want you to respond to a short answer question.
C stand for Claim
E stands for Evidence
R stands for Reasoning
3
But what is Evidence?
Evidence is the step where you cite the story. You pull the most relevant quote to the point you are trying to prove.
Many students are aware of HOW to quote a passage, but we are seeing that students are struggling with discerning the BEST quote to pull.
4
Not Just Any Quote Will Work
You need to find the best quote for the job.
Some quote are irrelevant to the question being asked, or only vaguely mention the topic when another quote directly speaks on it. You need to really ask yourself, "Is this the best sentence for my point, or is there a better one I can use?"
5
Let's Practice Together
First, you will need to read the prompt, and think of an answer.
Then, I need to find a quote that backs up my claim. If I cannot find a quote in the story that backs up my claim, that is a good hint that my claim may be wrong. I need to look for a claim that directly shows my point.
6
Using Sinkhole, answer the following question
What does the Narrator think the sinkhole does?
Ok. Easy enough. The narrator thinks the sinkhole fixes things. I remember that from the story. So all I gotta do is find the quote that best shows that.
7
Multiple Choice
Help me decide which quote from the story best proves the narrator thinks the sinkhole fixes things
I told him it felt good to throw the broken flashlight.
I flicked the switch and the light came on.
“The sinkhole fixed it,” I whispered.
They all reappeared on the coffee table good as new.
8
How does the narrator's attitude towards the sinkhole change throughout the story?
At first, the narrator doesn't like the hole, but then she becomes obsessed with it.
I recommend you looking for a quote that either shows how the narrator didn't like it at first, or shows she is obsessed later in the story. You will have to type that evidence on the next slide, EXACTLY AS IT APPEARS IN THE STORY.
9
Open Ended
Write your quote using the following sentence stem:
The story says, "Write your quote here."
10
And that's it!
You can do this! But...
You can't really pick the best evidence consistently unless you are paying close attention to the story. There are often several quotes that are closes, but one quote that would BEST prove the claim. Be mindful. Take your time.
