Ancient Mesopotamia Timeline of Empires

5000 BCE.

- The Sumer form the
first towns and cities.
They use irrigation to
farm large areas of
land.

4000 BCE -

The Sumer establish
powerful city-states
building large ziggurats
at the center of their
cities as temples
to their gods.

3500 BCE

- Much of lower
Mesopotamia is
inhabited by numerous
Sumer city-states such
as Ur, Uruk, Eridu, Kish,
Lagash, and Nippur.

2330 BCE

- Sargon I of the
Akkadians conquered
most of the Sumerian
city states and creates
the world's first
empire, the Akkadian
Empire.

-Empire building Sargon was one of the world's first empire builders.

-Established a dynasty

-Unified the region

-Created a postal system

-Established a bureaucracy

-Established a military

-Promoted the arts

-Promoted trade

1792 BCE

- Hammurabi becomes
king of Babylon. He
establishes the Code of
Hammurabi and
Babylon soon takes
over much of
Mesopotamia.

604 BCE

- Nebuchadnezzar II, the
king of the Chaldean
dynasty of Babylonia
-He ruled for 43 years and
brought the Babylonian
Empire to its peak.

The End of an Empire

This new empire was
overthrown in 539 BCE
by the Persians who
then ruled over the
region until the time of
