Students are going to interpret word problems and create one step equations that model those real world situations.

3

Procedures:

1) Read the problem.
2) Select the equation that models the situation.
3) Explain why the equation works.

4

Example 1:

Your school is raising money for hurricane relief. The goal is to collect $1,000. So far, you’ve raised $350. You need to figure out how much more you need to reach the goal. Select the equation needed to solve the problem.

B) x + 350 = 1000
C) x - 350 = 1000
D) x - 1000 = 350

Normally, a household uses 150 gallons of water per day, but they need to cut that down to 80 gallons per day. You need to find out how many gallons they must reduce their usage by. Select the equation needed to model the situation.
A) x - 150 = 80
B) x - 80 = 150
C) 150 - x = 80
