Gamification:
Examples of Gamification:
-Duolingo
-Khan Academy
-Turning your kids weekly chores into an adventure where levels can be met and badges are earned.
-Points instead of grades.
Remember gamification seeks to bring game elements to non-gaming situations. Yes this may look like playing games. However on a deeper level this means using a game like structure to make learning or every day tasks more engaging.

Motivation is Key
Gamification seeks to create a more engaging classroom by increasing student motivation. This aspect of gamification is one that has many differing opinions. Many argue that gamification can be too focused on extrinsic motivators and can leave students only motivated by rewards. "Studies have shown that tangible rewards significantly undermine intrinsic motivation" (Dahlstrøm, 2017). Others argue that gamification drives intrinsic motivation by making the learning experience deeper and more meaningful. This means how we incorporate gamification is important. It can't just be about the reward but needs to be about the journey to get there.

Enjoy this Ted Talk from Joe Houde as he dives further into the topic of motivation in gamification. Notice how his focus is on how rewards are only a part of the equation. The process, storyline, and social interaction that students experience is key to effectively motivating your students or your target audience.
