  • Examples:

    • "I play soccer every weekend."

    • "You read books regularly."

    • "We study together after school."

    • "They work in the garden on Sundays."

  • Add "-s" or "-es" to the base form of the verb.

  • Examples:

    • "He plays soccer every weekend."

    • "She reads books regularly."

    • "It works well for the project."

3. Rules for Adding "-s" or "-es":

The simple past tense is used to describe actions or events that happened in the past. It is one of the most common tenses and is used to refer to actions that are completed and finished.

1. Structure of Simple Past Tense:

  • Affirmative:
Subject + past form of the verb
    Example:

    • "I visited my grandmother yesterday."

    • "She watched a movie last night."

21

  • Negative:
Subject + did not + base form of the verb
    Example:

    • "He did not (didn’t) go to the party."

    • "They did not (didn’t) finish their homework."

  • Question:
Did + subject + base form of the verb?
    Example:

    • "Did you call your friend?"

    • "Did they enjoy the concert?"

22

2. When to Use Simple Past Tense:

  1. To talk about completed actions in the past:

    • Example: "We visited Paris last summer."

  2. To describe a sequence of events or actions in the past:

    • Example: "She woke up, ate breakfast, and left for work."

  3. To describe habitual actions in the past:

    • Example: "When I was a child, I played outside every day."

  4. To talk about past states or situations:

    • Example: "He was very tired after the long journey."

23

For verbs ending in two consonants, two vowels, or a vowel + consonant that is not stressed, just add "-ed" without doubling:

  • Examples:

    • rain → rained

    • help → helped

    • Example in a sentence: "It rained all day."

24

Rules for Forming the Simple Past with Regular Verbs:

  1. For most verbs, simply add "-ed" to the base form:

    • Examples:

      • play → played

      • work → worked

      • clean → cleaned

      • Example in a sentence: "I played soccer yesterday."

  2. For verbs ending in "e", just add "-d":

    • Examples:

      • love → loved

      • dance → danced

      • Example in a sentence: "She loved the concert."

25

For verbs ending in a consonant + "y", change the "y" to "i" and add "-ed":

  • Examples:

    • cry → cried

    • try → tried

    • Example in a sentence: "They tried to fix the car."

  • For one-syllable verbs ending in a single consonant with a single vowel before it, double the final consonant and add "-ed":

    • Examples:

      • stop → stopped

      • plan → planned

      • Example in a sentence: "He stopped at the store."
