Skip Counting Routine: Start the lesson with these three counting and skip counting
routines that use Base -10 Blocks to skip count by place value.
Counting by
ones from 1
to 10
Start with one cube. Count by ones from 1 to 10: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9,
10. At each new one, add another cube. When you get to 10, trade the
10 cubes for one rod. Continue counting a few ones past 10: 11, 12, 13.
Base -10 Blocks
Skip Counting
by tens from
10 to 100
Start with one rod. Skip count by tens from 10 to 100: 10, 20, 30, 40, 50,
60, 70, 80, 90, 100. At each new ten, add another rod. When you get to
100, trade the 10 rods for one flat. Continue counting a few tens past
100: 110, 120, 130.
Skip Counting
by hundreds
from 100 to
1000
Start with one flat. Skip count by hundreds from 100 to 1000: 100, 200,
300, 400, 500, 600, 700, 800, 900 … 1000. At each new hundred, add
another flat. When you get to 1000, trade the 10 flats for one large
cube. Grade 4 and 5 students will count past 1000 in the summary.

Create a 3-digit number using the Virtual
Number Generator(4th down from the top) by
throwing the number generator three
different times.

Record the numbers on the game board.

Place the number in the top circle of the
number bond.
4.
Create the number using base ten blocks
on the Place Value Chart.
Tell students they will be working to build 3-digit numbers in
different ways. Explain the procedure:

Decompose/break apart the number into
hundreds, tens and ones on the bottom
circles of the number bond.
5.
Check the base ten blocks to make sure it
is the same quantity as the number bond.

Write the number in word and expanded
form. Use the Place Value Vocabulary
