What You Need
globe
lamp
Tilt the Northern Hemisphere of the globe toward the
lamp and move the globe around the lamp. Record
observations about the amount of light on the globe.
Draw a diagram showing how sunlight reaches Earth
at different times of the year.
What is not accurate about your model of the Sun
and Earth?
Explain how the tilt of Earth affects the pattern of
sunlight and seasons.

Earth’s Orbit
Choose the correct statement.
As Earth orbits the Sun, the amount
of sunlight a place receives changes.
As Earth orbits the Sun, the tilt
of Earth’s axis changes.

What is Earth’s axis?
Earth’s axis is an an imaginary line from the North Pole to the South
Pole through the center of Earth.

What causes seasons to change?
An orbit is a curved path around an object. Earth’s axis is tilted
towards or away from the Sun at different points in its orbit, so it
receives different amounts of sunlight. This causes seasons.

Earth’s Tilted Axis
What happens when the Northern Hemisphere is tilted toward the Sun?
When the Northern
Hemisphere is tilted
toward the Sun, it
receives more direct
sunlight.
The season is
summer.

A ________ is a period of the year that is
distinguished by special climate conditions. The four
seasons (spring, summer, fall, and ________) follow
one another regularly. Each has its own
light, ____________, and weather patterns that repeat
yearly. The _______ of seasons is caused by Earth’s
tilttoward the Sun.

Seasons
Earth experiences seasons because —
A.
the Sun is always changing its position with respect to Earth.
B.
of Earth’s tilt and its changing position with respect to the Sun.
C.
the Sun spins on a straight axis as it completes a full orbit.
D.
Earth and the Sun both stay in fixed positions.
23
21
The tilt of the Earth’s axis is about 23.5 degrees. How does this tilt affect
the intensity of sunlight received during different seasons?
A.
The tilt has no impact; seasons are caused by the Earth’s distance
from the Sun.
B.
The tilt brings the Earth closer to the Sun during summer and farther
during winter.
C.
The tilt makes the Earth spin faster, changing the length of the day.
D.
The tilt causes one hemisphere to receive more direct sunlight,
creating summer in that hemisphere.
