Case Study: Can Psychics Talk to the Dead?
In the 19th century, many people believed that spiritual mediums could talk to the dead. These mediums would hold seances—gatherings where they claimed to communicate with spirits. Sometimes, strange things happened during these seances, such as furniture moving or knocking sounds. However, over time, many mediums were caught cheating, and the tricks were exposed
3
Today, there are still people who claim to communicate with the dead, but they are called psychics. Instead of moving objects or making noises, modern psychics provide information about people’s dead relatives, sometimes offering details that seem shockingly accurate. Famous psychics, like John Edward and Sylvia Browne, have made a lot of money by convincing people that they can connect with those who have passed away.
4
There are four possible explanations for why psychics seem to know things about the dead:
Hypothesis 1: Psychics are really talking to the dead.
Hypothesis 2: Psychics are using telepathy to read people’s minds.
Hypothesis 3: Psychics are using cold reading, a technique where they guess information based on clues from the person they are reading.
Hypothesis 4: Psychics are gathering information about people before their performances.
5
Step 1: State the Claim
Let’s start by stating the claim that psychics make.
Claim: "Psychics can talk to the dead and pass on messages from them to the living."

What do psychics claim they can do?
7
Step 2: Examine the Evidence
Next, we will look at the evidence psychics use to support their claim. For example, psychics often give accurate information about a person’s dead relatives that seems impossible to know.
8
Step 3: Consider Alternative Hypotheses
Now, we’ll explore other explanations for how psychics might seem to know these things. Let’s look at each hypothesis.
9
Hypothesis 1: Psychics Are Really Talking to the Dead
This is the explanation that psychics themselves give. They claim that they can communicate with the spirits of dead people and pass on messages from them to the living.
Evidence for this Hypothesis:
Psychics often seem to know specific details about people’s relatives, such as names, causes of death, or personal memories that seem impossible to guess.
Some people say that the information given by psychics is so accurate that it must come from the dead.

Why might some people believe that psychics are really talking to the dead?

Hypothesis 2: Psychics Are Using Telepathy (Mind Reading)
This hypothesis suggests that psychics are not talking to the dead, but instead, they are using telepathy to read the minds of the living people in the room. Maybe they are picking up thoughts from audience members who know the information about their dead relatives.
Evidence for this Hypothesis:
The psychic always talks to someone who is still alive and knows the information. For example, a psychic might know that someone's grandmother loved a specific brooch, but this is something the living person also knows. So maybe the psychic is reading their mind instead of communicating with the dead.
People who believe in telepathy think that psychics could be using this power to gather information without asking direct questions.

Could psychics be reading people’s minds instead of talking to the dead? Why or why not?

Hypothesis 3: Psychics Are Using Cold Reading
Cold reading is a technique used by some performers to make it seem like they know personal information. In reality, they don’t know anything in advance—they’re just making educated guesses based on how people react to vague statements.
Evidence for this Hypothesis:
Psychics often make vague statements like “I’m seeing a father figure” or “I’m sensing something about the month of May.” These statements could apply to many people. For example, “father figure” could be someone’s father, grandfather, or even an uncle.
The psychic watches how the person responds to these vague statements and then adjusts what they say based on the reactions.
Cold reading works because people tend to focus on the hits (correct guesses) and forget the misses (wrong guesses). On TV shows, the misses are often edited out, so it looks like the psychic is always right.

Hypothesis 4: Psychics Are Gathering Information Ahead of Time
This hypothesis suggests that instead of talking to the dead, some psychics might be researching their audience in advance. They could be finding out personal information before the performance and then pretending they got it from the dead.
Evidence for this Hypothesis:
Some psychics have been caught doing things like talking to people before the show or researching their lives online to gather information.
For example, if a psychic knows that someone will be in the audience, they could search for that person on social media and find out details about their family, such as a deceased relative’s name or a favourite memory.
TV psychics might also get information from show producers or other audience members before going on stage so that they can surprise people with personal details during the show.
17
Step 4: Rate the Hypotheses Using the Criteria of Adequacy
Now that we’ve explored each of the alternative hypotheses, let's rate them using these criteria:
Simplicity: Is the explanation simple, or does it rely on complicated assumptions?
Scope: Does the explanation cover all the facts?
Fit: Does the explanation fit well with what we already know about the world?
