Unit 3 Lesson 2b:
Problems of Translations
2
Goal:
Students are going to perform, describe and solve problems of translations.
3
Concept:
Arrow Notation
Arrow Notation, (x, y) ----> (x + a, y + b), where "a" and "b" are real numbers that describe the motion of x and y.
4
Concept:
Coordinate Displacement
Coordinate Displacement, (a, b), where "a" and "b" are real numbers that "displace" x and y by the quantities of "a" and "b".
5
Procedure:
1) Use Pythagorean Theorem to find the straight line distance between points.
2) Add translations to find the rigid motion between points.
3) Compare the two.
6
Graph the translation:
(x - 2, y - 3)
Example 1:
7
Graph the translation:
(1, 1)
Example 2:
8
Compare the sum of the translations to the straight line distance between the points.
