Logos (Logic)
Definition: Logos means using logic, facts, or reason to convince someone.
Explanation: When you use logos, you’re providing evidence or facts to make your point stronger. It’s like using numbers, statistics, or logical steps to prove something.
Example: If you’re trying to convince your teacher that homework should be shorter, you might say, “Studies show that too much homework can make students stressed and tired. Reducing homework time can help us get better rest and be more focused in class.” Here, you're using research or facts to make a logical argument.
3
Ethos (Credibility)
Definition: Ethos is about using credibility, trust, or reputation to persuade someone.
Explanation: When you use ethos, you’re showing that you or someone else is trustworthy or has authority on the topic. This could mean sharing your own experience or referring to experts.
Example: To persuade your friends to exercise more, you might say, “Doctors agree that exercising at least 30 minutes a day keeps you healthy. My older brother, who’s a track coach, says staying active can really make you feel better.” Here, you’re using trusted sources (doctors and your brother) to back up your point.
4
Pathos (Emotion)
Definition: Pathos is using feelings or emotions to persuade someone.
Explanation: When you use pathos, you’re trying to make the listener feel something, like happiness, sadness, or excitement, to get them on your side.
Example: If you want to convince your family to get a pet, you might say, “Imagine coming home to a happy dog that’s always excited to see you. It would make the house feel so much warmer!” Here, you’re using the idea of happiness to make your family feel positive about getting a pet.
Using logos, ethos, and pathos together can make arguments really convincing!
