This is a quick review of cellular organization.

3

Photosynthesis & Cellular Respiration

  • Reactants of one process....

  • ... are the products of the other process

Quick review of yesterday's lesson: No notes needed

4

Energy renewal

  • Energy captured from sunlight by photosynthetic organisms is used and released in the cellular respiration of living things.

  • The energy that living things use, must continually be renewed through photosynthesis.

Capturing the Sun's Energy

  • This energy-capturing process occurs in the leaves and other green parts of the plant.

  • Chloroplasts are green organelles inside plant cells. In most plants, leaf cells contain more chloroplasts than other parts of the plant

  • Chloroplasts capture the light energy and use it to power the second stage of photosynthesis.

Layers of a Leaf

A leaf consists of the following layers:

1. Cuticle

2. Upper epidermis

3. Palisade mesophyll

4. Spongy mesophyll

5. Lower epidermis

6. Pores (openings) also known as stomata

Cuticle - Thick, waxy covering that protects plants from drying out

Epidermis - Single, protective layer of cells

Mesophyll - Conducts photosynthesis, has chloroplasts

Stomata - Allow gases into and out of the leaf for photosynthesis

Guard Cells - Control the opening and closing of stomata
Transpiration - Process of leaves losing water vapor through the stomata.
