Basics of Linear Momentum
Mr. Cascabel
2
Momentum
An object in motion will have these two quantities: velocity (v) and mass (m). Together, mass and velocity makes up momentum (p). Momentum of objects are directly proportional to its mass and velocity. So a heavy object, a fast object or both can have a large amount of momentum.
3
Which has a greater momentum?
A basketball that rolls 1 m/s or a 10,000 kg tank at rest?
4
Momentum
Momentum relies on the quantity or magnitude of both the mass and velocity. If either the mass or velocity of an object is zero, the momentum will then be zero just like the parked tank.
p = m x v
It is unclear why momentum is denoted as "p". It was the Germans and French who first used p to represent momentum.
