ABILITY/CAPABILITY (KEMAMPUAN)

- we use modals CAN to show someone's ability and CAN NOT / CAN'T to show someone's inability of doing something.
- we use Modals CAN + VERB1 to make the dialog
example :
(+) I can play guitar (subject + CAN + verb1 + object)
(-) I can not dance (Subject + CAN NOT + VERB1 + object)
(?) can you dance? (CAN + subject + verb1 ?)

EXPRESSIONS OF ASKING ONE'S CAPABILITY AND RESPONDS

ASKING ONE'S CAPABILITY:
- Can you help me close the window, please?
- Can they answer the questions?
- Can he come on time?

RESPOND TO SHOW ONE'S ABILITY/CAPABILITY:
- Sure. Let me help you with the window.
- Of course. They are all smart.
- Yes, he can. He will be here earlier.

8

RESPONDS TO SHOW INABILITY/INCAPABILITY
- I'm sorry. I can't help you with it. I'm in hurry.

- No, they can't. The questions are too difficult.
- I'm afraid he can't. He has to take his daughter to school first.

*CAN is alse used to ask for permission in an informal situation.
- Can I borrow your ruler?
- Can I open the window?

9

COULD is a past form of CAN.
We use COULD when we want to show someone's ability in the past time.

  • I could sing Mariah Carey's song when I was a young girl, but now I can't.

  • Dedi can walk. Last month he couldn't because he was sick.

13

(+) subject + WILL + verb1 + obj/adj
(-) subject + WILL NOT + verb1 + obj/adj
(?) WILL + subject + verb1 + obj/adj?

WOULD is a past form of will. It is used to show past willingness and a polite invitation.
