Do Now
Students dissolve 30g of salt in 450 g of water. What is the
mass of the salt that is in the solution after it has dissolved in
water?

Patterns on Earth
LO:SWBAT
describe and illustrate the
continuous movement of
water on the surface of
Earth through the water cycle.
DOL: Given scenarios, SW correctly describe and illustrate
the continuous movement of water on the surface of Earth
through the water cycle in at least 4 of 5 questions.
SCI.4.10A Describe and illustrate the continuous movement of water above and on the surface of Earth through the water cycle and
explain the role of the Sun as a major source of energy in this process.

What is runoff?
What is collection?

7
How are sunlight, water, and weather related?
Write about some weather conditions you have
experienced.
Describe how different parts of the water cycle
happen in the model.
Draw a diagram of your model that shows parts
of the water cycle.

Where does the water go after precipitation occurs?
9
9
What is runoff and collection?
10
10
Where does your runoff water end up at?
Groundwater is water that is
found under the ground! After it
rains, some of the water soaks
into the soil and keeps going
deeper until it reaches places
where there is a lot of rock or
tightly packed soil. This water
fills up the spaces between
rocks and soil, sort of like filling
up a sponge.

11
Why is the ocean important in the water cycle?
Over 96% of the Earth’s water is
stored in the oceans.
It supplies water vapor to the
atmosphere through
evaporation.
The freshwater can be
evaporated from the saltwater.
12
12
Let’s Revisit the Phenomenon
How does
water move
on the
Earth's
surface?
13
13
Water Cycle
The change of water
from one state to
another as it moves
between Earth’s
surface and the
atmosphere
14
14
Runoff
Water that moves
over the ground
and into oceans
and rivers
15
15
Collection
When water that falls
from the clouds is
temporarily stored in
bodies of water, such
as rivers, lakes, and
oceans.
16
16
Groundwater
Water that is
stored beneath the
Earth’s surface
Groundwater
17
17
Condensation
Condensation is the
process of a gas
cooling and changing
to a liquid. This is
how clouds are
formed in the water
cycle.
18
18
Precipitation
The falling of water
back to the Earth in the
form of a liquid (rain,
snow, sleet, or hail)
19
19
Evaporation
The process by
which liquid water
changes into water
vapor
20
20
Water Cycle
Label the steps of
the water cycle using
the words below.
Precipitation
Condensation
Groundwater
Runoff
Evaporation

Water Cycle
A diagram of the stages in the water cycle is shown below. Which of these
observations would most likely be seen at Stage N? Explain.
A.
Water flowing downhill
B.
Fog forming along the road
C.
The water level of a pond decreasing
D.
Dark clouds forming the sky
