As soon as I opened my eyes, I knew something was wrong. The walls around me were pulsing with a neon glow, the air smelled like cotton candy, and — was that a giant hamster on a unicycle whizzing past? I rubbed my eyes, but there it was, still pedaling in circles around me, squeaking happily. I tried to step forward, but my feet stuck like I’d stepped in glue. I wobbled, nearly toppling over as a balloon with eyes drifted by, staring at me. My hands shook as I reached for my phone, only to realize it was now shaped like a banana.

When I looked up, I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. There were goats — yes, actual goats — running wild down Main Street. One of them jumped on a parked car, bleating loudly, while another trotted past with a bag of potato chips hanging from its mouth. People on the sidewalk were scrambling to get out of the way, and someone shouted, “Watch out!” just as a goat nudged a trash can over, spilling garbage everywhere. I clutched my grocery bag tightly, inching backwards as one of the goats made eye contact with me, its eyes wide and determined. My legs felt like jelly, and I could feel myself sweating, but I didn’t dare move as it slowly started walking toward me.

The elevator lurched to a stop between floors with a loud clank, and the lights flickered before going completely dark. My hands flew to the walls, searching for something steady, but all I found was cold metal. Somewhere in the corner, someone’s phone started playing a faint, scratchy version of “Stayin' Alive,” and I could hear nervous laughter from the people behind me. I tried to steady my breathing, but every second felt like an hour. When the lights blinked back on for a second, I caught my own wide-eyed reflection in the metal doors — just as the elevator jerked again and then went still. My stomach flipped as I realized we weren’t going anywhere anytime soon.

The second I stepped onto the stage, I knew something was off. The audience was packed — faces everywhere, all staring up at me — but I couldn’t hear a single word they were saying. That’s when I looked down and realized the microphone in my hand was… a rubber chicken. My notes were gone too, replaced by a crumpled menu from a pizza place. I glanced backstage, hoping someone would notice, but the stage manager just gave me a big thumbs-up. My mouth went dry as I cleared my throat and tried to make something — anything — sound confident. The rubber chicken let out a weak squawk in response, and I could feel my cheeks heating up as laughter started rippling through the crowd.

As I walked into the classroom, everyone turned to look at me. I tried to smile, but something felt wrong. Then I noticed it: every single person in the room was wearing a bright purple hat — even the teacher. They stared at me like I was the one who looked strange. I looked down, hoping I hadn’t forgotten something important, but all I had on was my usual jeans and t-shirt. I felt a bead of sweat trickle down my neck as I slid into my seat, trying to act normal while everyone whispered and glanced my way. My mind raced, wondering if I’d missed an announcement, some kind of hat day... or if this was all some weird joke I wasn’t in on.

As soon as the plane started bouncing, I gripped the armrests so tightly my knuckles turned white. Outside the window, all I could see were dark clouds swirling, and every few seconds, a flash of lightning lit up the sky. The overhead bins rattled, and I could hear the flight attendants telling everyone to stay seated, their voices sounding oddly calm. My stomach did a flip as the plane dipped suddenly, and a few people let out nervous gasps. I forced myself to breathe slowly, but my heart was racing, and I couldn’t stop imagining the plane dropping right out of the sky. I glanced around, hoping someone else looked as nervous as I felt.

The roller coaster climbed higher and higher, clicking with each rise. I thought I was ready for this — until I looked down. The park below looked like a toy set, tiny dots of people and colorful rides all far, far beneath me. I gripped the bar in front of me as my seat tilted forward, giving me a perfect view of the hundred-foot drop ahead. My heart pounded so loud I was sure the person next to me could hear it. Just as I took a deep breath, the ride jerked to a stop at the top. We dangled there, the wind whipping past, and I tried to laugh it off, but I could feel my fingers shaking on the bar. The only thing I could think was, “Please… just let us get down.”
