• You can determine a word's meaning by studying its word parts or looking up its definition.

• Using context clues refers to looking for hints in a sentence, paragraph, or other text to figure out the meaning of unknown or unfamiliar words. 

• Context clues depend on inferences.

Common types of context clues are:

• definitions provided later in the sentence

• definitions that can be inferred from the events in the story

• definitions that can be deduced because they are the opposite of what is being described.
