Why is Remembrance Day celebrated in the UK?

Remembrance Day which is also known as Armistice Day is
on the 11th November every year, it is a day to remember and
honour all those who have served and died in the British
Armed Forces.

We usually do this with a two minute silence.

Why the 11th November?

The 11th November 1918 was when the fighting of the First World
War came to an end so that a peace agreement could be reached.
This war had seen millions of men lose their lives whilst fighting in
horrific conditions in the trenches of Europe.
It was known as the ‘war to end all wars’.

The first two-minute silence in Britain was held on 11 November
1919, when King George V asked the public to observe a silence
at 11am (the time when in 1918 the gunfire had stopped) in order
to collectively remember those who had lost their lives.

It was felt to be important to remember the sacrifice that
these people had made in order to ensure the freedom of
others.

It is also hoped that by remembering what has happened in
the past we can stop similar things from happening again
in the future.

Remembrance Day Today

Whilst the first Remembrance Day was used to
remember those who had lost their lives in the
First World War, today we also use the day to
remember the British armed forces who have
lost their lives in later wars as unfortunately the
First World War turned out not to be the ‘war to
end all wars’.

World War Two began in 1939 and the British
armed forces being involved in conflicts around
the world since then.

Much of the fighting during World War 1 had been in trenches
built on farmland across Europe. At the end of this fighting the
land was left barren with little growing. The red poppy was one
of the first plants to begin to grow again.

Wearing Poppies Today
Today, the red poppy is worn on Remembrance Day by
people all over the world. It is a symbol of both
remembrance and hope for a peaceful future. The
money raised from the sale of poppies is used to support
British veterans and their families.

There are also other coloured poppies worn on
Remembrance Day. The white poppy (often preferred by
pacifists) is a symbol of peace without violence, and the
purple poppy is worn to honour animals killed in conflict.

Remembrance Sunday

Remembrance Sunday is held on the closest Sunday to
11th November each year in the UK and many
Commonwealth countries. On this day services and
events will be held and a two-minute silence is observed
at 11:00am, many shops and other locations will ask
people to stop what they are doing as a sign of respect.

In London, a memorial is held at the Cenotaph where the
monarch (as head of the armed forces) will lay the first
wreath. Many people who have fought for our armed
forces or their representatives will also attend. Wreaths
will be laid at churches and war memorials across the UK.
