An experiment is a scientific process used to find answers to specific questions. In an experiment, scientists test only one variable at a time to see how it affects the results. Everything else in the experiment must be kept the same to ensure the test is fair and accurate. By repeating the experiment the same way every time, scientists can trust their results.

In science experiments, we often use independent variables (IV) and dependent variables (DV) to help us test and learn new things. Let’s use an example with plants to explain this clearly.

The independent variable is the one thing you choose to change in an experiment. For example, if you want to see how different amounts of water affect the growth of a plant, the amount of water you give to each plant is the independent variable. You decide how much water each plant gets.

The dependent variable is what you measure or observe to see if it changes because of what you did. In this case, you would measure how tall each plant grows or how healthy it looks. The growth of the plant is the dependent variable because it depends on how much water you gave it.

So, in this experiment:

  • Independent Variable (IV): The amount of water given to the plants.

  • Dependent Variable (DV): The growth or health of the plants.

By changing only the amount of water (IV) and keeping other things like sunlight and soil the same, you can see how the amount of water affects the plant’s growth (DV).
