Types of figurative language

  • Simile - A comparison using "like" or "as."

    • Example: "Her smile was as bright as the sun."

  • Metaphor - A direct comparison, saying something is, are, was, or were something else.

    • Example: "The world is a stage."

  • Personification - Giving human qualities to non-human things.

    • Example: "The wind whispered through the trees."

  • Hyperbole - An exaggerated statement.

    • Example: "I’ve told you a million times!"

  • Alliteration - Repetition of the same initial consonant sound in nearby words.

    • Example: "Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers."

  • Onomatopoeia - A word that imitates a sound.

    • Example: "The bees buzzed in the garden."
