Essential Understandings &
Guiding Questions
How are weather and climate different?
How can you distinguish between weather and climate data?
6
Multiple Choice
Which of the following best describes weather?
day to day conditions of the atmosphere at a place in regards to heat, dryness, sunshine, wind, rain, etc.
long-term conditions (months/years) of the atmosphere at a place in regards to heat, dryness, sunshine, wind, rain, etc.

What are some important skills people need to be
able to read and interpret maps correctly?

8
Meteorologist are scientist that can predict weather. A
prediction of future weather conditions is called a forecast.
1.
What is the high
temperature
expected in
Mississippi?
2.
What is the
expected low
temperature in New Mexico?
10
9
Carefully analyze the climate table below.
1.How is Houston’s climate different from Anchorage’s climate?
2.Which city is considered to have a mild winter?
3.What is the difference between the average annual (yearly) rainfall of Memphis and Anchorage?
City
Climate Type
Annual Average

Average Winter
Temperature
Houston
Humid subtropical
49.77 inches
6.2 to 16.8 degrees

Memphis
Subtropical with four
distinct seasons

High pressure systems bring cooler and drier air. High pressure
systems usually provide us with fair weather.
Low pressure systems can cause the formation of clouds and storms.
A warm front is a mass of warm air that replaces a mass of cool air.
The red half circles on the symbol point in the direction that the warm
front is moving.A warm front can bring some rain followed by clear
skies and warm temperatures.
A cold front is a mass of cold air that moves in to replace a mass of
warm air.The blue triangles on the symbol point in the direction the
cold air is moving. Cold fronts can bring cold temperatures, heavy
rain and strong wind.
.

13
Which city will have
a warm front coming
in soon?
Memphis
What type of weather
will the warm front
bring?
Warm
temperatures;
clear skies
15
14
What is Climate?
The long term average pattern of weather in a particular area.
The data is
collected over
many years to
determine the
average
climate in an
area.

rainfall?

Weather Maps
Weather conditions may change throughout the day, for example, if a
cold front moves in from the north, the temperature will drop.
Meteorologists use weather maps to
inform communities of the weather in
their area, so they can prepare for the day.
Weather maps may contain information such
as temperature,
precipitation, warm fronts, cold fronts,
or storms and hurricanes.
18
17
Climate Maps
Climate is the average conditions in different places
over a long period of time.
Climate maps show average temperatures across
a span of time, such as a year or sometimes even 30
years!
Climate maps do not change daily like weather
maps, but are for long-range conditions. They may
record average high or low temperatures, average
amounts of precipitation, average drought
conditions, or even average number of storms.

21
Average
When quantities are
added together and then
divided by the number of
quantities
Example: The temperature for the last
3 months in Dallas are 90°, 82°, and
84° 90° + 82° + 84°= 256°
256° ÷ 3 = 85.3°
The average temperature is 85.3°

Some students were watching the
news this morning and the map
was displayed when the
meteorologists mentioned today’s
forecast. Which student do you
think is correct about this type of
map?
Rebecca
Mason
I think this is a
picture of a
climate map
because it shows
how hot and cold
different cities are.
I think this is a picture
of a weather map
because it is
displaying information
for today’s current
conditions.
