Investigation 1:
Coordinate Plane

​By drawing two perpendicular number lines and extending the tick marks,

we can create a grid over an entire plane called the coordinate plane:

​The horizontal line: x-axis
The vertical line: y-axis

​Where the 2 lines intersect: Origin

​(-3, 3)

​Coordinates are written as a pair of numbers in parentheses, such as (-3,3). The first number is the horizontal direction and distance from the origin. (Left or Right) The second number is the vertical direction and distance from the origin. (Up or Down)

​The 2 axes divide the plane into four
regions called quadrants.

​2. The vertices of a square are located at (2, 2), (2, -1), (-1, -1), and (-1, 2). Draw the square and find the perimeter and area.

1. Graph these three points: (2, 4), (0, 2), and (-3, -1). Then draw a line that passes through these points.

2. Find the perimeter and area of a rectangle whose vertices are located at (3, -1), (-2, -1), (-2, -4), and (3, -4).

3. Name the quadrant that contains each of these points:
a. (-5, -4) b. (4, 1) c. (1, -1) d. (-3, 5)
