W

hether it’s playing

in the park, hiking

up a mountain, or lying on the beach,

people love to spend time outside. Before we

head out, we should use some form of sun protection

1.

One popular form is sunscreen, which is usually applied directly

to

2 the skin to protect it from the sun’s harmful

3 rays.

There are two main types of sunscreen. The first one is physical

sunscreen, which is also called mineral sunscreen. It creates a physical

barrier between the skin and the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. Physical

sunscreen scatters

4 and reflects UV rays away from the skin. This type of

sunscreen is ideal for

5 people with sensitive skin because it sits on top of the

skin without being absorbed. However, for the same reason, it can easily be

rubbed off

6 and needs frequent reapplication.

The other choice is chemical sunscreen, or organic sunscreen. Unlike

physical sunscreen, chemical sunscreen absorbs UV rays and turns

them into heat

7. This heat is then released

8 from the skin. However,

chemical sunscreen needs to be absorbed by the skin to be

protective

1, so it takes around 20 minutes to become

effective.

I

n spite of the importance of protecting your skin from the sun,

some people believe sunscreen is harmful. One of the claims

1

made by these people suggests that a chemical in sunscreen may

affect our body’s hormoneproduction

2. Their concern came from

a study that was done on rats. However, in the study, the chemical

was fed to

3 the rats instead of being placed on their skin. Scientists

have also explained that a person would need to use sunscreen for

277 years to reach the same amount used in this study.

Some people have also claimed

1 that sunscreen is not a

useful measure

4 against skin cancer and might even cause it.

Many studies have proven these theories

5 wrong and shown how

well sunscreen can prevent the most common types of skin cancer.

Also, statistically speaking, people who wear sunscreen tend to

6 be

under the sun more often. It is the high amount of sun exposure,

not the use of sunscreen, that increases their risk

7 of skin cancer.

All in all, no studies have shown that sunscreen can harm

humans when it is applied to the skin. Anyone who wants to keep

their skin looking young and healthy should protect it from UV rays.

Using sunscreen is one of the best ways to make this possible
