​The liter is the basic unit of capacity in the metric system. We are familiar with 2-liter bottles of soft drink. Each 2-liter bottle can hold a little more than a half gallon, so a liter is a little more than a quart. A milliliter is 0.001 (1/1000 ) of a liter.
