Our key words tell us what operation the problem wants us to solve.
Make sure to write and study these words to help for your test!

Operation Key Words

When adding and subtracting fractions with LIKE DENOMINATORS.
- As long as the denominators are the same, you simply solve the numerator.

When adding and subtracting fractions with UNLIKE DENOMINATORS
- Find common factors for the denominators
- Multiply both numerators and denominators
- Once the denominators are the same, solve for the numerator

Adding & Subtracting Fractions

media

4

When MULTIPLYING fractions
- Multiply both the numerator and denominator straight across

When DIVIDING fractions
- Technically, we cannot divide! So we need to do a trick.
- Keep, Change and Flip
Keep the first fraction
Change the operation to multiplication
Flip the fraction to it's reciprocal
- Then you can multiply straight across

Ratios is a comparison between to different quantities
- 5 cats to 4 dogs
- 10 girls to 28 students in class

When comparing ratios we want to make sure they are equivalent.
- Equivalent means that they are equal or the same
- If I multiply/divide one quantity, I must do the same to the other, in order to stay equal.

Ratios

media

17

media

This is one model you can use to solve for your ratios!
Double number lines are similar to ratio tables.

Ratios focus on only multiplying and dividing for patterns. So whatever you multiply the top, you od the same for the bottom.

Double Number Lines

Tape diagram is good for visuals! Just like using pictures of cats and dogs.
These are the best to use when the ratio gives you a total amount. That way it's easy to solve for the part!

Tape Diagrams are also nice because whatever goes in one box, goes to ALL of the boxes.
So if there is a total of 32 Drama DVD's and only 8 boxes, I ask "what number can go in there 8 times to equal 32?" This will help solve for my Mystery DVD's.

This is nice to easily and quickly find the missing value in proportions AND to test if ratios are equivalent!

Remember, you're solving for x so what did we do to 5 to get 15?
I know 5 x 3 = 15
So I will then multiply 3 to get my x
3 x 3 = 9
x = 9

Proportions

The formula for solving for percentages is here!

Fun Fact - Your desmos scientific calculator lets you type in "__% of __" and gives you an answer!

The coordinate plane is broken into 4 different quadrants.
Quadrants
- Q1 (+X, +Y)
- Q2 (-X, +Y)
- Q3 (-X, -Y)
- Q4 (+X, -Y)
Make sure when plotting your points, you move X first (left and right) then Y (up and down)

Coordinate Plane

32

media

When we reflect over the coordinate plane, we need to make sure to that we remember which value changes!
If we reflect over the X-AXIS
- The X stays the same, Y is the opposite
If we reflect over the Y-AXIS
- The X is the opposite, Y stays the same
