Open Ended

During a class discussion on a novel, Sarah sits at her desk, staring blankly at the page in front of her. When the teacher calls on her to share her thoughts about the main character’s motivations, she shifts uncomfortably in her seat, avoids eye contact, and responds with a quiet, “I don’t know.” Despite the teacher’s repeated encouragement to share any ideas, Sarah remains silent, showing little engagement with the lesson, as if disconnected from the material. Her lack of participation seems to stem from uncertainty about the text, but also possibly from a fear of being wrong in front of her peers.

Question: Is Sarah Participating or not? Give at least three specific reasons to back up your answer.

Word Cloud

During a small group activity on a recent reading, Jake eagerly flips through the pages of the novel, trying to find a quote that supports his point about the protagonist’s inner conflict. He leans in as his classmates discuss their ideas, contributing his thoughts on how the character's actions show fear, not just bravery. As the conversation grows, Jake listens intently, asking insightful questions that help his peers refine their analysis. By the end of the discussion, the group has coalesced around a deeper understanding of the text, with Jake playing an active role in shaping their shared conclusions. Using a word cloud use at least two words that show if Jake is "Collaborating" or not. Be ready to support the words you chose.

Poll

1--Read the situation.

2--Decide if this is a P, E, C, or C.

Situation: In an 8th-grade social studies class, students are asked to design a solution to a real-world problem, like reducing plastic waste in their community. One student, Ella, comes up with the idea of a “plastic-free challenge” for her school, where students compete to see who can reduce the most plastic waste. She creates a campaign with posters, a digital app to track progress, and a school-wide clean-up day. Ella says she was inspired by the effects of plastic pollution on the environment and wanted to motivate her peers to take action in a fun and engaging way. She also collaborates with other student groups to make her project even bigger and more effective. This option can be multiple.

2--Read the specific situation: In an 8th-grade science class, students are learning about the effects of climate change. One student, Jake, becomes really engaged when the teacher shows a video about melting ice caps and how it affects wildlife. Jake raises his hand to ask questions and then suggests ways the class could help, like reducing energy use at school. He explains that he’s interested because he’s passionate about nature and wants to learn how he can make a difference. Jake says that seeing real-world examples of the issue makes him feel more connected and motivated to get involved. This option can be multiple points. You will not get points for clicking all of the answers.
