When we think about cause and effect we learn to understand what is going on in the story better.

It all started when Oliver decided to impress his family by cooking spaghetti for dinner. Confident in his “chef skills,” he tossed the noodles into the pot and turned the heat up to maximum. Unfortunately, he didn’t notice that the pot was already overflowing with water. Within minutes, the boiling water bubbled over, hissing and steaming like an angry dragon. In a panic, Oliver grabbed the nearest towel to clean up the mess, only to realize it was his mom’s favorite decorative towel—the one that read “For Display Only.” As he mopped up the flood, the towel’s fancy fringe caught fire on the stove burner. Chaos erupted as Oliver screamed, grabbed the fire extinguisher, and coated the entire kitchen (and himself) in white foam. Dinner was canceled, and pizza delivery saved the day.

Lila couldn’t find her left shoe anywhere. She checked under the bed, in the closet, and even inside the refrigerator—just in case. Growing frustrated, she accused her little brother of hiding it. After a full-scale investigation (complete with walkie-talkies and magnifying glasses), Lila finally found the shoe—on the dog’s foot! Apparently, her mischievous pup had slipped its paw inside the shoe and was proudly parading around the backyard. In her attempt to retrieve it, Lila tripped over the garden hose, sending both herself and the dog into the mud. The shoe was rescued, but Lila was forced to take a very long shower, and her dog needed one too.

Tommy had been eyeing the cookie jar all day, but it was placed on the tallest shelf in the kitchen. Determined to snag a chocolate chip cookie, he stacked three chairs on top of each other and climbed up like an explorer scaling a mountain. Just as he reached the top, the tower of chairs wobbled. Tommy grabbed the cookie jar, but the lid popped off, sending cookies raining down like a sugary avalanche. At the same time, the chairs collapsed, leaving Tommy sprawled on the floor, covered in crumbs and guilt. His mom walked in, raised an eyebrow, and handed him a broom.

25

Open Ended

Cause: Tommy stacked chairs to reach the cookie jar.

During a rare snowstorm, Jessie built the biggest snowman her neighborhood had ever seen. She decorated it with a carrot nose, a scarf, and sunglasses, naming it “Chillbert.” The next morning, Jessie woke up to find Chillbert mysteriously smaller—and dripping! Believing someone had sabotaged her masterpiece, she launched a full investigation, complete with fingerprints and snowball traps. Hours later, her dad gently explained what “melting” was. Jessie, however, remained unconvinced. She rebuilt Chillbert, this time adding an umbrella, sunscreen, and a fan to keep him cool. Sadly, Chillbert still didn’t survive the afternoon sun, leaving Jessie with nothing but a puddle and a soggy scarf.
