This lesson contains an excerpt from 'Treasure Island,' based on the
original novel written by Robert Louis Stevenson. The story chronicles the
adventures of a young narrator who discovers a treasure map. The
interactions and conflicts that arise in the narrator's quest to find treasure
can be violent and therefore sensitive to some readers. Be sure to read the
text first and prepare appropriate support strategies for students who may
be affected by this content.

1. The day could not have been finer for flying a kite.
The sky was huge and inviting, its deep blue
softening to white at the edges. Not a single cloud
spoiled its beauty. Still, Martha thought of the chores
that needed doing, of the book left unfinished on her
bed. She reached for any excuse she might give her
father to get out of the promise she had made.

The Science Project

Maya's science project wasn't going as planned. The bean plants that
were supposed to grow toward the sunlight had barely sprouted, and the
science fair was in three days. Just when she was about to give up, her
older sister Jen noticed that the windowsill was too cold. Together, they
moved the plants to a warmer spot on top of the bookshelf. By Friday, tiny
green shoots were reaching up toward the ceiling, and Maya learned that
sometimes the best solutions come from asking for help.

Lunchtime Friends

Devin couldn't believe he had forgotten his lunch money again. As he sat
quietly at the cafeteria table, his stomach growling, his best friend Marcus
slid into the seat next to him. Without saying a word, Marcus broke his

Marcus said with a shrug. Devin smiled, realizing that while he might be
