1
...biological evolution.
2
...voluntary mutation
3
...species extinction
4
...selective breeding

Question image
The trees these moths used to live on were white, but have been covered in soot from coal factories. Which moth will be more successful in this environment?
1
Dark moth
2
Light moth
3

4
Neither will be successful

Artificial Selection

Does not occur naturally.

Humans influence or choose what traits are passed down to offspring.

3 types can occur:

  • Selective breeding

  • Inbreeding

  • Hybridization

40

Artificial Selection

Selective breeding- organisms with desirable traits are made to reproduce to enhance or ensure the traits are passed down.

Inbreeding- This occurs when humans make offspring reproduce to enforce the desired trait. When the same population of an organism are bred together, more offspring will get recessive genes that cause disease or deformity.

Hybridization- breeding organisms with different desired traits to create offspring with both traits

43

Multiple Choice

Which of the following explains adaptation.
1
An individual organism changes to meet its needs in the environment. These changes pass down to their offspring.
2
The species as a whole changes their characteristics.
3
Beneficial traits allow organism to survive and pass on those traits
4
New characteristics arise in a species as needed.  If these traits are helpful, they are passed down.

44

Multiple Choice

1. The process of choosing parent organisms for desired characteristics is called

1

natural selection

2

Artificial selection

3

random selection

4

genetic manipulation

45

Multiple Choice

What is an example of artificial selection?

1

Letting dogs choose their own mate

2

Letting plants pollinate on their own

3

Crossing a labrador and a poodle to create a labradoodle

46

Multiple Choice

Adaptations can be:

1

camouflage

2

ability to survive cold weather

3

hunting skills

4

all of the above

47

Multiple Choice

Why are advantageous traits more likely to be passed onto offspring?
1
Because they are more likely to survive and reproduce.
2
Because they come from dominant alleles.
3
Because they come from recessive alleles.
4
Because the trait is an acquired phenotype.

48

Multiple Choice

Definition: natural selection
1
inherited characteristic that increases chances of survival
2
organisms with traits well suited to their environment survive and reproduce at a greater rate
3
a growing population causes a scarcity of resources
4
differences in the DNA sequence

49

Multiple Choice
